History of National Library of Dominica

The Centre was first established in the Ministry of Finance and was later centralised and placed within the Ministry of Education under the Library and Information Service to contribute toward the improvement of the information infrastructure in Dominica. It was re-established as the National Documentation Centre and began operation from the Documentation Centre Building on March 15, 1990.

It was designed by a popular administrator, Mr. Hesketh Bell and funded by a Scottish born philanthropist, Mr. Andrew Carnegie.

The Roseau Public Library on Victoria Street dates back to the early 1900's.

The library was formally opened on 11th May 1907 and provides knowledge and education through the provision of books, magazines etc. free to all who live and work in Dominica. It also co-ordinates the operation of the branch libraries.
